Manual J, S and D: What Your Utah Project Actually Needs

Plan reviewers and inspectors increasingly ask for load calculations with HVAC submittals. Here is what each report does and why it matters to your schedule and your buyer.

Manual J: how much heating and cooling the house needs

Manual J calculates heat loss and heat gain room by room, using the home's orientation, windows, insulation, air tightness and local design temperatures. It is the foundation for everything else.

Manual S: which equipment to install

Manual S matches real equipment capacity to the Manual J load. Oversized equipment short-cycles, leaves humidity problems and wastes your buyer's money; undersized equipment can't keep up on design days.

Manual D: how to size and route the ducts

Manual D sizes each duct run so every room gets the airflow Manual J called for, at a static pressure the equipment can handle. Good duct design is the difference between a comfortable house and one that generates warranty calls.

Why it matters to builders

  • Correct reports speed up plan review.

  • They prevent re-work at rough-in.

  • They cut down warranty calls after closing.

DML coordinates plan-specific Manual J, S and D design, so the design, the equipment and the installation match. Request a bid or call (385) 307-8871.
